Why Personal Training?

Goals?
Results?
Motivation?
Expertise?

Let’s face it; have you made significant progress in the last 4 months? In the last year? Are you a beginner to fitness and don’t know how to get started? Are you new to kettlebells and want to learn proper/safe/strong technique?

WHAT do you want to achieve and WHY?

Most people don’t really know what they want to achieve. I frequently hear, “I want to get toned” or “I want to be big and strong” or “I want to get in-shape.”  What is ‘in-shape’ anyway? Big and strong for what? How toned? Can you get too toned?

Getting results means having a plan of attack and sticking to it. But if you don’t know what you want to achieve you can’t make an effective plan of attack. It is like driving from New York to _______ (you don’t know where you are going). How long will it take to get to ______ if you don’t even know when you get there? Step one is determining where _____ is. Step 2 is making a map to follow so you get there in the most efficient manner possible.

The first thing I will help you do is decide exactly WHAT you want to achieve and WHY you want to achieve it.

Setting Goals

If there are those out there that are familiar with or even good at setting goals (not very many) they may not know what is realistic. So you want to lose 20 lbs of fat, get toned, improve your hamstring flexibility for martial arts class AND you want to strengthen your back so it doesn’t hurt when you pick up and play with your kids. OK GREAT, still not very specific training goals but that is where I come in and make the training goals to get you those results.

Do you know what the best approach is to achieve those? Do you know which order you should work towards those goals in order not to cause more harm to your back? Do you know which goals compliment each other and can be achieved simultaneously? ……. I do.

Those of you in business have heard of SMART goals. I make SMART goals for your training.

Specific – Exactly what to achieve
Measurable – How we will measure it
Achievable – Realistic goals in a given time
Relevant – WHY, how will it improve your life? The emotional content that makes you workout
Time Based – Need to look good in a bathing suit by Summer

Motivation

When you join the military there is plenty of motivation to exercise; the drill instructor’s boot up your butt. However in the real world especially in the realm of lone wolf trainees which most of us are, it is hard staying motivated and most people don’t dig the drill instructor method of motivation, but if you do I have a really big boot that I don’t get to use very often!

Obviously if you are training with me 1-on-1 there is motivation. I prefer the positive encouragement technique personally. If you are training in a small group (2-4 people that you know) then you have motivation from me and your small group of friends/family. If you are in one of my large group classes, it is self-motivating to keep pace with the class. Even if you are one of my internet or phone clients I require you to send me a weekly training log (possibly nutrition log as well depending on your goals). No I won’t force you to you are an adult and I’m not your boss nor would I want to be. But knowing that you will be staying accountable to someone is motivating. You don’t want to send me a training log at the end of the week that reads, “got busy and skipped this day”, “tired and skipped this day also.” NO, that will not happen comrade!

Expertise

Sure you’ve read Men’s (or Women’s) Health Magazine and learned a cookie cutter program created by someone catering their training to what they think the magazine will want to publish…. But that can’t replace the expertise of a real coach. Even professional athletes who are accomplished and have been working out for a long time still have dedicated fitness coaches to get them to their goals. Heck, even a lot of coaches and trainers have coaches and trainers because for some reason it is easier to monitor someone else’s training than their own.

I have worked with people who vary anywhere from absolute beginners to people who have been working out longer than I’ve been alive. It never fails that I am able to show even those experienced trainees how to improve their lifting technique, training program or even goals and as a result their progress takes off after years of being stale. Don’t believe me? Read the Testimonials section for a few of my client’s results.

Not only am I certified in arguably the best certification program out there for real world strength and conditioning but also I have been trained by some of the best and most brilliant trainers and coaches out there today. Couple that with the fact that I eat and breath this for a hobby and career and the countless hours I have spent and continue to spend researching and experimenting and you get a wealth of expertise that just can’t be replaced by a health club membership, magazine article, book or even many personal trainers who do this for a living.

Bottom line is that if I’m not experienced enough in an area to help you I will tell you and if I know someone who is I will even refer you to them. No ego comrades I’m not in this business to strut my stuff; I’m in it to change people’s lives for the better and make a living doing it.
